My whale watching journey

 Hello! My friend,

I'm going to share my whale-watching diary with everyone, from an amazing journey to a thrilling adventure. I hope you all enjoy it.

There are three parts of my diary in my Podcast

  • The first part will be in English, where I'll share the diary's content.
  • The second part will be in Chinese.
  • In the final part, I will share some Chinese vocabulary words from the diary and show you how to say.

Word Power

Half a year ago, I signed up for a long-awaited whale-watching trip, and finally, it happened this weekend. Since the departure was at 6:30 in the morning, I woke up at 4:30 in the morning on the day of departure. After getting ready, I hurried to the meeting point. As I was the first to board the tour bus, I managed to secure a seat that I thought would be less prone to motion sickness.

Gradually, as more people boarded the bus, it became livelier, but an unusual incident occurred at the last stop. One of the group members failed to board the bus, and the tour guide didn't notice until we were on the highway. When the tour guide distributed meals, she suddenly realized, and with a puzzled expression, she said, "Strange, why is there an extra meal?" It was quite an absurd situation.

After contacting the missing group member and to avoid further delay to our schedule, it was decided to refund their fare, and the bizarre incident was put to rest.

During the journey, in order to keep everyone from getting too bored on the tour bus, the tour guide asked for suggestions and decided to have a singing session. However, it turned out to be a nightmare as not everyone had angelic voices. Some of them were genuinely terrible singers, and it was horrifying to listen to. These individuals had the audacity to choose multiple songs and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, oblivious to the fact that their voices were worse than a duck's quack.

Upon reaching the hotel for our overnight stay, the tour guide provided instructions for the next morning's boat trip. I went to my room and decided to go to bed early. After all, it had been nearly ten hours on the road, and my ears had been subjected to several hours of unbearable singing. I needed to rest early to ensure I wouldn't get seasick and could fully enjoy the long-awaited whale-watching trip and the beautiful sights of Turtle Island the next day.

Finally, I arrived at the harbor, and after a series of boring waiting times, I boarded the sightseeing boat. With high hopes, I asked the tour guide about the probability of seeing dolphins once we were out at sea. His response was uncertain, but he mentioned that there was typically a 70% chance of seeing them. I observed the cloudy sky and asked about the sea conditions for the day. He assured me that the conditions were excellent. I thought to myself that this trip was sure to be a success, and I began to imagine the wonderful experience ahead.

As the boat slowly left the harbor, I couldn't help but notice how it was rocking quite violently. I started feeling a bit queasy, and I looked around at the other tour members. Everyone seemed incredibly cheerful and excited, and their laughter and shouts filled the air. After half an hour, the waves became even larger, and the cheerful atmosphere on the boat disappeared. Nearly 90% of the passengers had turned pale, and many were lying down, feeling seasick. After another half hour, everyone was vomiting, and the smell was nauseating.

Strangely, I felt completely fine, and my spirits were high. It was probably my determination to see the dolphins that kept me going. I stood alone at the bow of the boat, scanning the horizon for any signs of dolphins. At this moment, the tour guide announced over the microphone that due to the unfavorable weather, it was unlikely we would see any dolphins.

It was a sudden disappointment, and I was among the 30% who couldn't catch a glimpse of them. But there was nothing I could do; after all, these marine creatures weren't like pets that woulad come to you when called. They roamed the vast ocean freely. This thought eased my disappointment, and I concluded this regretful journey, promising myself that I would try again next year if the opportunity arose.
